A Study of the Metallurgical and Mechanical Properties of Friction-Stir-Welded Pure Titanium

Commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) plates were friction-stir welded (FSWed) using a welding tool with tungsten carbide (WC) pin. The bead-on-plate technique was applied to reduce the effects of defects, such as incomplete penetration. An X-ray inspection and fractography showed that FSWed material free defects WC particles, which may have originated from tool. appearance refined equiaxed grains in thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) been related dynamic recrystallization (DRX) occurring during FSW due high temperature intensive plastic deformation involved process. Grain refinement, mechanical twinning, increased dislocation density detected within TMAZ, these microstructural changes considered be responsible for improved properties TMAZ. TEM study reported current paper revealed presence nano-sized processing stage. microstructure obtained Ti has several publications, yet many discrepancies can found publications. Among are size shape at various zones, well or non-presence zones vicinity weld. contradicts argument correlations between conditions prevailing different points across TMAZ changes, previously proposed by researchers.
